Access those deep-seated spark plug holes with this new digital compression tester from Laser Tools
Tuesday 25 March 2025
You need to do a compression test on a petrol engine. You’ve opened the bonnet and immediately realise the challenge of actually trying to find the spark plugs! The difficulty arises mainly due to the compact and tightly-packed design of modern engine bays, where components like turbochargers, intake manifolds, and wiring harnesses can restrict access to the spark plug holes. Other contributing factors include the increasing use of deep-set spark plug wells and engine designs with multiple covers or shields. Laser Tools to the rescue! The new petrol-engine digital compression tester kit (part number 9037) comes equipped with a variety of adapters and extension hoses, ensuring you’re ready to tackle even the most challenging compression tests.
It will provide accurate and efficient compression testing for modern petrol engines across cars, motorcycles, light commercial vehicles and marine applications. Plug thread sizes covered are 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 16mm and 18mm, and the gauge can be set to read in kPa, bar, MPa, psi, or kg/cm² units to suit all manufacture’s recommendations. The battery-powered display also boasts a memory function, useful when testing multi-cylinder engines.
The kit is comprehensive: the easy-to-read digital compression gauge is equipped with a 650mm long hose; two 285mm flexible extension hoses for 14mm spark plugs are included, one for standard-reach plugs, the second for long-reach plugs. You’ll find 10mmm 12mm and 18mm adaptors plus a 12mm hose adaptor for Ford engines. Additionally, a 16mm hose adaptor for the Ford Triton engine range is included. For deeply-set spark plug wells, a solid deep-well connector is supplied.
All supplied in a sturdy blow-mould carry case to keep the components safe, secure and tidy. This is the only petrol-engine compression tester you will ever need. Available now for purchase from your Laser Tools stockist and online retailers.
